WHO IS SHE? Melissa is the 20-year-old star of the American children's series Clarissa Explains It All, shown on BBC1. Yesterday afternoon ITV viewers saw her in the first of a new family series called Sabrina, The Teenage Witch. Whereas in Clarissa Melissa plays an ordinary teenager, in Sabrina she plays an ordinary teenager who, on her 16th birthday, is told she is a witch. She then finds her ability to turn almost anything into a pineapple a touch irksome. The series also stars the bizare magic duo Penn & Teller plus Deborah Harry as members of the witches council.

WHAT IS SHE LIKE? Blonde, very pretty, wholesome, rather like the parts she plays. Being a sensible girl she has kept up her studies and has recently finished her sophomore year at New York University. She works for charities, oh and she's talented too. But (if more proof were needed) she has won three youth in film awards and was nominated as Best Actress in a Comedy Series for Clarissa Explains It All.

WHERE DOES SHE COME FROM? A native New Yorker she is the oldest of six acting siblings. She made her first TV commercial at the age of four and has not stopped working since. Her Television credits also include The Equalizer, Kane and Abel, The Luci Arnaz show and Saturday Night Live.

WHY SHOULD WE CARE? ITV Network Director Marcus Plantin has said: "Sabrina has already taken America by storm with its mixture of teenage angst and magical fantasy. In fact, it has been described by the LA Times as the best new comedy of the season."
